P-N junction, electron/hole flow, exponential diode equation, valve, photovoltaic solar cell, LED
The diode equation describes the I-V (current vs voltage) characteristics of the p-n junction under forward and reverse bias:
I =Io[exp(qV/kT -1)].
k = Boltzmann constant
T = Kelvin temperature
q = charge of an electron
The reverse saturation current depends on the doping levels and the physical size of the diode. The e exponent, qV/kT, is V/.026 volts at room temperature.
When V is zero, the current is zero as expected.
When V is more than about .1 volt, the exponent term is a large number (around 47 or more) and the minus 1 can be ignored. Then the current is just an exponential function of V:
I =Io*exp(qV/kT ).
When V is more negative than about -.1 volt, the exponent term is close to zero (around 0.02 or less) and can be ignored. Then the current is just minus Io, the reverse saturation current:
I=-Io
The diode is said to operate like a one-way valve. A perfect valve would operate like an open circuit or infinite resistance when the voltage is negative, or a short circuit or zero resistance when the voltage tries to go positive. The current flows only in the positive direction.
A diode is not quite a perfect valve. With a negative voltage applied, the current is very near zero. With a positive voltage applied, a large current flows with very little resistance after a small voltage threshold is reached. The small threshold depends on the reverse saturation current, temperature, and the amount of current that is considered normal for forward operation of the diode.
At larger negative voltages, the p-n junction can break down and conduct a large current. This is reversible and non-destructive as long as the current is small enough to prevent heat damage. A diode designed to operate this way is called a Zener diode. There are two mechanisms that cause reverse bias junction breakdown, called avalanche and tunneling breakdown.
In avalanche breakdown, a strong electric field in the depletion region accelerates mobile charges to such a speed that they can impact silicon atoms and generate new electron-hole pairs, which themselves are accelerated to a high speed, and so on. Tunneling breakdown occurs when one side is very strongly doped and therefore has a very narrow depletion region through which quantum tunneling of majority carriers can occur.
A p-n junction can operate as a solar cell. Light shining on the semiconductor generates new electron-hole pairs. Minority carriers at the junction are swept to the opposite side, where they become majority carriers and escape recombination. The newly created particles move away from the junction, providing a current for electric power.
A light-emitting diode is a solar cell operating in reverse. An external power source feeds electron and hole majority carriers toward the junction. They are injected across the junction, where they recombine with the opposite type of carrier, releasing energy as light. The wavelength of the generated photons depends on the energy gap through which the particles fall, following the Planck equation, E=hv.

      I got my lenses from GSC International Inc, double-convex glass lenses, 38 mm diameter, 10 cm focal length, 20 for $24 plus $13 shipping. There are other good sources as well.

      Also, almost any magnifying glass lens will work. You can get one from a stationery store, drug store, or dollar store; or shop online. Stronger magnifying power will produce a SMALLER image.

    First of all thanks!!! If you're in Aus, this applies to a 2009 Corolla (2007 on). Supercheap Auto sells a Tridon kit for them. PN: MRJ2028-2. NOTE. They are pre-cut to size and one wiper is shorter than the other so don't do what I did (tired) and just grab one, fit it and cut the excess like the old skool jobbies. You'll end up with the driver side one too short. Other than that, this vid is straight to the point.

    Thanks, just what I needed! I knew no need to replace the whole wiper. Easy Peasy! The rear wiper is a bit different. Any clues on how to release it?

      The plastic cover at the base of the rear wiper in hinged at the base. Pull up on the cover and it flips away from the wiper. Then you can tilt the wiper blade up just like the front wiper.

    I appreciate your efforts in making the prototypes and explaining the Si crystal. By far this has been the best video I have ever seen. However, I am a little confused with the wafer primary flat's direction. For a (100) wafer, the primary flat is along [110] direction. If this is the case, than how can the wafer surface be (100) plane? Please help!

      Take the unit cell and place it flat on a table. Get on your knees and look at one face head-on -- you are looking in the [100] direction at the (100) plane. Tilt the unit cell clockwise 45 degrees, so the face appears as a diamond shape and the cell rests on one edge, and all the sticks appear to run vertical and horizontal from your point of view. Now the table top is the (100) plane, which is the plane of the primary flat. Any plane parallel to the table top is also a (100) plane, including the one that passes through two diagonally opposite edges of the unit cell. In fact, any plane that passes through two diagonally opposite edges of the unit cell is a (100) plane. See pages 3-4 in www.chu.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Chenming-Hu_ch1-3.pdf

      You can make it with a pinhole, but the image will be dim. For a larger hole and brighter image, you need a lens.

    Awesome video! I have one question, and I am relatively new to this, but can this be used to switch between two different power sources? Instead of having 0V and 1V as an output, could it switch between voltage levels from two different battery sources using one control voltage? It would be like an SPDT switch. I want to avoid using a relay or 4 transistors in an H-bridge setup. Thanks!

      No, the CMOS inverter is just one tiny component among millions in an integrated circuit. You're looking for discrete power components. You seem to know a lot about them.

    There’s a reason why shoes companies are using synthetic leather nowadays, The EU Policy or anywhere in the world for that matter is strictly against making of genuine leather shoes in large scale, they have to hike the price so less people can afford the premium range but for regular models with the same price they aren’t allowed to manufacture as they used to.

      These retail at 100 eu. Seems like a premium enough price for use of proper materials. The offering of this model on the official Reebok website suggests it's real leather. There is no indication in the product description that it is a fake leather shoe.

    I am doing Windows 11 Pro Setup on the Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB in the Vilros Keyboard TouchPad Hub. I Use a Uperfect 15.6 " touch screen monitor.
